The Carolina Head and Neck Cancer Study is a cohort of participants diagnosed with Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Head and Neck (SCCHN) in North Carolina in 2019. The study collects information on demographics, socioeconomic, quality of life, tobacco and alcohol consumption, medical history of acute and chronic diseases, healthcare services utilization, oral health conditions, and sexual behavioral health to identify potential contributors to outcomes, and thus reports potential areas for improvement.

Study Design

The CHANCE-2 is a prospective cohort that uses Rapid Case Ascertainment (RCA) in collaboration with the North Carolina Cancer Registry to identify participants with newly diagnosed Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Head and Neck region living in any of the 46 counties of North Carolina. Enrollment began in 2019 and is still ongoing. Eligible participants are enrolled after four months of diagnosis and followed up through telephone, and mail surveys. The study collects data from Medical records, Tumor samples, and a Survey Questionnaire. The participants are followed up in multiple phases with updated medical records.
